"Balanced Rock" -- 3500 tons of sandstone

This is one of my favorites.  It feels so mysterious.  (Even without fog.)

It is unspeakably wonderful to have these formations in my back yard.

  1. It strikes me that, in spite of their mission to leave the park as ‘natural’ as possible, the Park Service might just want to spray something impervious on that sandstone base to keep that puppy standing at attention for as long as possible. I mean, that is one big draw to allow to come crashing down needlessly.
Dad (may want to come to the park in a future life but doesn’t want to be disappointed . . .)

    • The idea of stabilizing sandstone monuments in Arches goes back to the 1940s. There are proponents and opponents, of course, and Delicate Arch is the most-discussed target. Click to read a fascinating bit of history for those thinking that we need to intervene NOW to prevent a fall.
