  1. In 1968, when we were living in Zululand, South Africa, I decided that our little girls (ages 5 and3) should have the experience of a steam train ride from Mtubatuba to Durban – about 200 miles. When I heard that the trip would take all night I quipped, “It must be going backward to take that long!” Well, we discovered that about half of the night it DID go backward as it shunted in and out of all the little stations along the way. If the window was open, black soot blew in and we began to resemble the Zulus. Nevertheless, it WAS an adventure and all three of us enjoyed the ride!
